SHOW NOTES
Welcome to episode 228 of the Hope Rescue Podcast! In our third and final installment of our series on teachability, we delve into the practical aspects of growth and adaptability, focusing on upskilling, effective feedback, and the challenges of pivoting. Teachability is crucial for personal and spiritual development, and today’s episode will provide valuable insights into these key areas.
Upskilling refers to the process of acquiring new skills or refining existing ones to remain competitive and effective in our careers and personal lives. It is not just about staying relevant in the job market but also about continuous growth in our journey as believers. In a rapidly changing world, upskilling allows us to adapt and serve more effectively, reflecting the Biblical call to be diligent and prepared in our work.
Proverbs 1:5: "Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance." This verse highlights the importance of continual learning and growth, which is essential for spiritual maturity and effectiveness in our various roles.
Feedback is a vital part of growth, but how we give and receive it can significantly impact its effectiveness. Constructive feedback should be delivered with grace and clarity, avoiding an environment of hostility that can lead to defensiveness.
Proverbs 25:11-12: "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear." This passage underscores the value of well-chosen words and wise correction. When feedback is given thoughtfully and received with a willing heart, it can lead to profound personal and spiritual growth.
Pivoting involves making significant changes in behavior or thinking, often challenging because of our investment in what we’ve built or planned. It requires humility and adaptability to alter our direction effectively.
Ecclesiastes 3:1: "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." This verse reminds us that change is a natural part of life. Embracing pivoting with a Christ-centered perspective allows us to adapt without losing sight of our core values and mission.
Barriers to Teachability
Understanding and overcoming barriers to teachability is crucial for growth:
Fear: The fear of failure or uncertainty can paralyze us from trying new things. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." Trusting in God’s guidance helps us face our fears and embrace new opportunities with confidence.
Ego/Pride: An inflated sense of self can hinder our willingness to learn. James 4:6 says, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humility is essential for teachability, allowing us to be open to new insights and correction.
Loss of Passion: When we feel disheartened or discouraged, our passion for learning can wane. Proverbs 13:12 states, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life." Rekindling our hope and passion through prayer and seeking God’s guidance can reinvigorate our desire to grow.
Loss of Belief: Doubting the possibility of change can prevent us from moving forward. Mark 9:23 says,"All things are possible for one who believes." Strengthening our faith in God’s ability to bring about change is crucial for maintaining a teachable spirit.
